Cannibalism is such an old practice as it is humanity and it comprises many implications. It appeared during intense hunger periods, pagan rituals and artistic representations. As an incontestable taboo in the west, it is regarded as a monstrous crime nowadays. In Literature, the character that usually summarizes such kind of barbarism is the ogre - a perverse creature that wants to devour anyone that may cross the pathway. The cannibal/ogre takes many forms of primitive gods, from witches or bad stepmothers of fairy tales to vampire versions. This article is about cannibalism in contemporary narrative taking into consideration the fascination that Hannibal Lecter - central character of Thomas Harris’s best-seller and successful visual narratives - causes. Considering the renowned psychiatrist and serial killer as a contemporary ogre, it is analyzed the relationship regarding an ancient myth, the myth of the savage male referred by the anthropologist Roger Bartra.
