Abstract

In the year of 1982, some mansions of Paulista Avenue were demolished overnight, contrary to the determinations of the official agency of preservation of the cultural heritage of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, Condephaat. Tensions between this public agency and the owners have appeared in the mainstream newspaper. This article examines 32 study processes for the preservation of Paulista’s buildings, as well as the minutes of Council meetings and the journalistic issues of the period. The intention is to understand how the institution proceeded and how it registered its action in these cases of buildings from the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century. This text aims to add elements to understand the complex set of interests that determines what we preserve and what we let disappear.
