“Feliz! Feliz! Feliz!”: um exercício de tradução da poesia em dialeto de Paul Laurence Dunbar

This paper presents a translation of the poem “Happy! Happy! Happy!” by Paul Laurence Dunbar, reflecting on the techniques used by the author and the solutions adopted in the translation. The paper is divided into three sections: the first presents an overview of Dunbar’s life and literary career; the second discusses “Happy! Happy! Happy!”, pointing out possible in- terpretations of the poem and some stylistic issues, with emphasis on the dialect used by Dunbar. Finally, in the third section, the poem’s translation into Portuguese is discussed, especially the translation of the dialect.
