Neste texto, Daniele Lorenzini explora a rica e complexa articulação entre dois dos principais projetos que caracterizam o trabalho de Michel Foucault nas décadas de 1970 e 1980: por um lado, o projeto de uma história da verdade e, por outro, o projeto de uma genealogia do sujeito moderno (ocidental). Nesta perspectiva, o ano de 1980 deve ser considerado um ponto de virada crucial, porque é nesse ano — no curso Do governo dos vivos (dado no Collège de France), bem como na conferência About the Beginning of the Hermeneutics of the Self (proferida na Universidade da Califórnia, na Universidade de Berkeley e no Dartmouth College) — que, de maneira original, Foucault conecta e articula explicitamente esses dois projetos.
