Abstract

In the second half of the 16th century, the issue of civil disobedience and political resistance occupied a prominent place in the European legal, theological and political debate due to the increasing persecution of Protestants by Catholic governments. Discussions about justification,
agents and lawful means of resistance to the established civil authority continued fierce in the first half of the 17th century, particularly during England's civil wars. The purpose of this article is to show the emergence and grounding of arguments supporting civil disobedience and political resistance within the reformed thought that were later used during the American and French Revolutions in the 18th century.
