The discussion about culture, in the teaching of foreign languages, is carried out under a dichotomy between language and culture. Regarding teaching Spanish for Brazilians, there is a silencing of issues such as the coloniality of power and knowledge, Eurocentrism and globalization, under the effect of a silencing of propagation and the imposition of knowledge that this process performs under economic power. We will discuss culture as a possibility of legitimizing senses produced from territorialities that were under colonization processes, highlighting what Sousa Santos (2010)
calls epistemologies of the south. We consider that such theoretical discussion is conducive to discuss culture as a discoursive object, as a discursive materiality constituted ideologically and historically (Pêcheux, 2002). We will present statements taken from a literary text to discuss the cultural relations between peoples who went through colonization processes, taking into account linguistic and discoursive aspects that are inherent in those discoursive materialities.
