In the "Primer Encuentro de Narradores Peruanos" that occurred in Arequipa, 1965, authors and literary critics of at least two different generations met. In the three debates, they discussed issues related to the canonical literary creation and the production of that period. Participants repeatedly mentioned José Carlos Mariátegui, as well as the literary movement named “indigenismo”. Based on the conference records ([1969] 1986) and subsequent reflections of scholars like Chang-Rodríguez (1986), Sánchez (1976), Escajadillo ([1980] 2004) and Sobrevilla (2012), this paper intends to present a brief tracing of the Amauta and the indigenismo influence in the statements and polemics rose during the conference.
