In the present paper, we examine the strategies for constructing the self in Memorias de la guerra (1989), by the Cuban/Dominican general Enrique Loynaz del Castillo, which was posthumously published. We defend the hypothesis that Loynaz del Castillo offers a heroic self-portrait in order to approach the national founders and excuse himself in relation to certain Máximo Gómez’ comments. He uses romantic novel and historiographical narrative techniques and establishes some limits for defining and justifying his character by representing his antagonist in an oblique way.
