This article investigates a documental archive in Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo and presents a theoretical and methodological reflection about the way documents are used in anthropological fieldwork. Based on a review of the points of contact between anthropology and history, it inquires the different analytic mediations that construct an ethnographical/historical “data”. On the one hand, this text analyzes the construction of the investigation´s object and the methodological strategy in this process. On the other hand, the documents are considered as traces of social practices, taking into account the specificity of the people, groups and institutions that produce and manage them in a certain historical-political context, particularly, in this case, the last military dictatorship in Argentina. Thus, it indicates epistemological problems about veracity, objectivity, reliability and authenticity of various documents: bureaucratic, judicial, journalistic etc.
