O DESENVOLVIMENTO DO ENSINO DA ENGENHARIA SANITÁRIA NA UNIVERSIDADE DE SÃO PAULO - BRASIL

The author, assistant professor of Environmental Sanitation at the School of Hygiene and Public Health of the University of São Paulo, Brasil, presents a note about the Sanitary Engineering Courses gíven at the School since 1949. and consíders its future possibilities. He describes the course's special charateristics, the curriculum and its orientation. He shows some aspects of its attendency, giving emphasis to the participation of foreign students, from others latin american countries, and engíneers commissíoned by brazilians official organizations. Following is presented the results of an inquiry, made among the 59 engineers graduated since 1949, to evalue their activities in the Sanitary Engineering field. The inquiry revealed that at least 30% of the brazilian graduated engineers are not working in the field; the author analyses this fact. lt is shown that the majority part of brazilian engineers working in sanitary engineering, are in the field of water and sewage. The author condemns the low demand upon technical personnel, at Ieast in Brazil, and suggests ways of solving such a situation. The author comments the efficiency of the courses, proclaimed by the graduated students, specially with reference to their technical work. Finally he discusses the course's future possibilities, expressing his beIief in such development.Downloads
