Effectiveness and safety of therapeutic ultrasound in musculoskeletal disorders: overview of Cochrane systematic reviews

Ultrasound therapy (UST) is a feature often used in clinical practice of the physiotherapist. However, there is no consensus in the literature regarding the effectiveness of this feature. Objective: The purpose of this article was to assess and synthesize the information contained in systematic reviews Cochrane related to the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders with UST. Method: We performed a search in the database “Cochrane Library” and selected the RS that addressed the UST as a treatment modality. Results: Were included six RS Cochrane who analyzed
the effectiveness of UST in different musculoskeletal demonstrating significant reduction of pain in osteoarthritis of the knee only, there are no reports of adverse events resulting from UST in all revisions included, is considered a safe treatment. Conclusion: The results presented in this study should be treated with caution because of the low methodological quality and heterogeneity of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) included in RS are limiting factors for the reliability of the data presented.
