Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic slowly progressive degenerative disease that most often affects the knee. Among the predisposing factors are age, obesity, previous surgeries or injuries, occupational and recreational cumulative effort, poor joint alignment and muscle weakness. Physicaltherapy in the conservative treatment aims to improve muscle strength, range of motion and joint stability. Group physicaltherapy is held twice a week, with stretching and strengthening exercises of lower limbs and sensory-motor training. Objective: The objectives of this study were to characterize socioeconomic and health profiles, distribution by gender and age and pain relief and satisfaction of patients with knee OA who underwent physiotherapy group from January 2005 to July 2011. Method: For this, were contacted by telephone 45 patients with a mean of 59.1 ± 8.17 years who remained in treatment for 246 ± 99 days, and of these 28.9% were retired, 49% were hypertensive, 57.7% had difficulty to climb one step and 80% came to physicaltherapy by bus. Results: There was a statistically significant improvement in pain for patients treated in 2007 (p= 0.006), 2008 (p= 0.001), 2009 (p= 0.003) and 2010 (p= 0.048). Conclusion: Through the analysis of personal and physical determinants we can conclude that group physicaltherapy could satisfactorily meet the population leading to an improvement of 35.82% in average pain and hence the satisfaction of 95.6% of the patients included in this study.
