Uses of recognition by Roberto Schwarz

Abstract

In “The ideas out of place”, Roberto Schwarz uses the idea of recognition at defining moments. Yet, this category is never fully worked out. Curiously, some of the usages he gives to that concept are similar to those given by Axel Honneth. So, this paper proposes a connection between both authors. In order to do that, first, Schwarz’s essay and some other ones are where he discusses recognition are exposed. After that, a connection between his ideas and Honneth’s recent theory of recognition is posed. Finally, with the eyes turned to Brazilian society, a reading of the concept of recognition is proposed, one that accounts for arbitrariness and class stratification in this country.
