Abstract

The article aims to make a literature review of some of the major studies on race relations in Brazil. The review comprises early 30’s (20th century) through current one and have in common the fact they regard racial discrimination as an important aspect for the maintenance of racial inequalities, gathering arguments which support the reflections as to the need of the adoption of the affirmative action policies in Brazil, as well as the ones who regards that the poverty and the inequality are the main aspects that contribute to the black people exclusion. Review such theories and concepts makes up a significant contribution to the effectiveness of the National curriculum guidelines for the racial and ethnic relations education.
