Abstract

Rabbit kidney has been used as a source for the purification of hexokinases. Phosphorylation of glucose, fructose, mannose, and galactose were accomplished by crude extracts, and by partialy purified preparations obtained from acetone powders prepared from prefrozen kidneys.Hexokinase activity in rabbit tissues was assayed in kidney, heart, brain, spleen and liver, and the relative activity for glucose, galactose, and fructose, measured taking the phosphorylating activity for glucose as 100 per cent. It has been shown that kidney contains the highest activity in galactokinase, this activity being higher than the phosphorylating effect of the preparations toward glucose.
