This paper analyzes the roles of riempitivi and digressions in the Natsume Söseki's novel Wagahai wa neko de aru (l am a cat, 1906) considered a typical 19" Century novel, which the Author created basing on English literary sources, mainly Laurence Sterne's The life and opinions of Tristram Shandy, gentleman (1760-1767). The humor in the Sõseki's novel - expressed in riempitivi and digressions- creates an ironical comedy, which hide a pessimistic and nihilistic conception of life.
