Slam poetry is a form of performed poetry created in the 1980’s by Marc Kelly Smith in Chicago. Since then it has gained adepts in many places around the world. Slam poetry is based on five pillars: poetry, performance, interactivity, competition, and community. One of its main characteristics is the particular affection of participant poets for themes regarding social and political issues. However, academic research on the topic is superficial about the discussion of slam poetry as a political manifestation. Therefore, the current study allocates the slam poetry as an object of analysis on the political theory field. In order to achieve that, 14 slam events were visited, 40 poems presented in such occasions were analyzed and 25 people who are part of the slam movement were interviewed. Results point that slam poetry is capable of creating emotional communities in which its members fight for a more radical and plural model of democracy.
