Maupertius e o pensamento evolutivo na época das luzes

Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis viveu de 1698 a 1759, sendo o introdutor e um dos primeiros defensores das idéias de Newton na França. Sua fidelidade à filosofia natural newtoniana serviu como pano de fundo para a construção de uma sólida carreira científica e filosófica junto à Academia de Ciências de Paris. Além de seus estudos em geometria, deixou uma importante obra em física, cuja realização maior foi a formulação do princípio de mínima ação. Em astronomia, esteve à frente do combate entre os sistemas de mundo newtoniano e cartesiano, sendo responsável pela comprovação empírica do achatamento da Terra nos pólos.
