This article aims to understand historical, linguistic and discursive aspects of the participation of free Africans in the constitution of Brazilian Portuguese, in the nineteenth century, in the Mato Grosso Mining Society, through the analysis of the edition of Façanha (2019) of the Livro de registro da correspondencia e mais acontecimentos relativos aos africanos livres entregues pelo Governo Imperial à Sociedade de Mineração da Província, codex in which information about the daily life of free Africans was recorded. Concerning historical aspects, we investigated the formation of the free Africans legal class and which African languages were brought to Mato Grosso, in the nineteenth century; regarding the linguistic aspects, we undertook a lexical-discursive analysis of the codex to understand the effects of meanings caused by the lexical units used to refer to free Africans. As a result, we found that the legal class free Africans; is just a legal distinction in relation to enslaved Africans, and that these came from the region called Austral Area, in which there is the predominance of languages from the Bantu subgroup; in our lexical-discursive analysis, we found that the lexical units used to refer to the free African go against what was understood by freedom in the nineteenth century.
