The goal of this research is to relate social analysis of nominal-number agreement in rural Portuguese with subjective evaluation of residents in Nova Friburgo third district. The data were collected through interviews carried out with endogenous farming families. For undertaking a variationist analysis, all pluralizable noun phrases were selected from an corpus, which it was recorded, transcribed, isolated, codified and quantified through morphic and syntagmatic approaches. For undertaking the evaluation, two test were applied: absent speech and pattern audio. In conclusion, considering the standard norms in agreement, the speech community is in intermediate stage. Furthermore, some factors are driving the change process in such community. The first one is younger generations who seem to have conditions to converge or diverge their speech depending on their interlocutory and social goals. The second one is the role played by women in both language subjective evaluation and vernacular use. The last one is men’s low self-recognition as a member of such speech community. However, they are more benevolent in their diatopic variation evaluation and, as a result, it reflects in their linguistic behavior, which it is more refractory to exogenous influences and more loyal to the local vernacular.
