Abstract

This text intends to analyse and comprehend the sense of the notion of necessity elaborated by Spinoza in Ethics I. Although this notion is not explicitly defined, it spreads through all the argumentative path of De Deo and therefore its comprehension is essential to a good understanding not only of the first part, but of Ethics as whole. For this purpose, we sought to demonstrate via the distinction between Natura naturans and Natura naturata the unequivocal sense of the noun ‘necessity’ as well as the equivocal sense of the adjective ‘necessary’.
