Abstract

When we read Descartes’ Metaphysical Meditations we realize that the philosopher seems not to trust the imagination, because it obtains its information from the senses of the body and the senses are sometimes misleading, resulting in obscure and confusing perceptions. This position of Descartes on the imagination is shared by several modern philosophers. The Cartesian influence in the shaping of Spinosian thought is incontestable, therefore we are almost immediately induced to look for similarities and common points between both. However, one must be careful to identify that despite being under the same conceptual limits, these philosophers differ in some points and sometimes even oppose each other. The objective of our work is to present what Spinoza thought about the limits of the imagination and, mainly, about its power.
