Abstract

This present article attempt to understand how happen the construction of feline’s character in novel I am a Cat of Natsume Sôseki. We begin with a reprise of various conceptions of cat´s figure in universal literature, and we compare it with novel’s characters, that in many aspects are the parody to this mythical figures, for the purpose of accentuate the social change of Meiji period (1868- 1912), such as, to criticize by character’s vocabulary the social stratification that cited period.
