Abstract

Mainly, this paper presents and discusses some of the most relevant ideas in John Goodlad’s (1920-2014) comprehensive work on the renewal and improvement of education, schools, society and democracy. Reading and consulting some of his acknowledgedly most influential texts, it was possible to draft a brief biographical synthesis of the author and also to identify some of the main guidelines that drove both his thoughts and his civic actions. His research and unflagging efforts to improve education and democracy, which he viewed as a symbiotic relationship, were always driven by the idea that critical and deep sociological knowledge in schools is imperative to their renovation and improvement. And this is, very likely, his most fundamental legacy.
