The aim of this paper is to examine how Carlos Drummond de Andrade, in some of his works, responds to the repressive context of the military dictatorship in Brazil in the mid-1970s. Through the analysis of a poem and a short story, and taking into consideration entries in his diary, this study tries to demonstrate how the poet felt obligated to deal cryptically with State terrorism and the political forces then in place, which contradicts the almost universal consensus on his literary production during this period and reiterates the poet’s commitment to his time.
