Abstract

The dominant paradigm that slavery is African and that it defines national stories is not restricted to Brazilian historiography. Both in Brazil and in other historiographical traditions, A consensus built over decades associated slavery with the traffic of Africans. This process forged a concept that is unable to explain social contexts characterized by other colonial forms of labor exploitation. The intent of this article is to map this theoretical course in Brazil. Based on empirical research focused on the Amazon region, it also suggests a broader approach to the notion of slavery.
