Alternatives for the generation of employment and income with sustainable regional development: case study of the Vargem Grande neighborhood subdistrict of Parelheiros, Metropolitan Region of São Paulo

This paper presents the results from the research "alternatives for employment and income generation on regional sustainable development: a case study of Vargem Grande, a neighborhood in Parelheiros, a subdistrict of São Paulo". The aim was the recovery of the historical neighborhood's occupation, and of the local population organization's types, as well as the characterization of the small local business, work and income generation initiatives. In the field research, a data gathering from the local business was made by 80 surveys of 27 open and closed questions about: business men profiles, business organization, employed work force, the use of information/communication technology, facilities and equipment, interviews with the leaderships from the local organizations with the purpose of recovering the occupation history and the present actions with the community. The results indicated that the business, that began with the local occupation in 1988 in Vargem Grande, present a group of common characteristics, in spite of their diversity. It was observed that the precariousness of the organizatinal forms is manifested in the predominance of informal groups of organization, in the reduced business dimensions and in the kind of infrastructure: provisory facilities with occupation of premises granted by third parties.Downloads
