Abstract

The first part presents general considerations on the antigert'ic structure of the salmonellas, carrying these studies up to the agreement of which resu-lted the Kauffmann-White scheme. The second part describes the technique used in certain studies on the serological classification of the Salmonellas. This shows that each author uses its own process but that practically, the results are more or less satisfactory. There follows a study on a salmonella isolated from an adult's stools (V. F.) ; the patient had some vomiting, bloodless diarrhoea, headache, abdominal pain and slight fever. After a short review of the morfologic ánd biochemical characteristics considered sufficient to place the germ observed in the genus Salmonella, its sorological study revealed the presence of somatic factors "IV" and "XII" and the ciliary "fg" factor in the specific phase. No factors were observed in the non specific phase. After severa! agglutination, absorbtion and mutual absorbtion tests it became evident that the organism was a monophasic salmonella with an antigenic formula equal to IV .XII: fg: - which expresses the antigenic constitution of Salmonella derby in accordance to the Kauffmann-White scheme, thus identifying race V. F .. The final section covers a brief discussion on the practical application of the Kauffmann determination and some comments on the identification done in this st~dy.
