Adaptation of the Dewey Decimal Classification for the children’s and Young adult collection at the Municipal Library of Marília “João Mesquita Valença”: a successful experience

Abstract

The Municipal Library of Marília "João Mesquita Valença" is an information center that offers updated materials in various languages and adaptations. With a diverse collection, the Library serves a wide range of users, including young readers who represent about 16% of the library's patrons. These young readers have access to a specific collection, organized by an exclusive classification that has been tested and validated. Classification plays a crucial role in the organization and accessibility of collections, establishing direct communication with users. However, traditional systems like the Dewey Decimal Classification can limit this communication, especially for children's and young adult collections. The notation 028.5, generally used for children's and young adult collections, groups various genres and themes without clear differentiation, making it difficult for young users to locate books independently. In light of this problem, it was observed that the classification used in Brazilian public libraries does not fully meet the needs of young users. Based on observations and reports from Municipal Library of Marília librarians, it was concluded that the rigid structure of the Dewey Decimal Classification needed adaptation. Thus, the proposed objective was to adapt the 800 class of the Dewey Decimal Classification to improve the organization and accessibility of children's and young adult collections, facilitating the independent location of books by young readers. This adaptation aimed to enhance the use of the collection, promoting a better reading and exploration experience in the library.
